Poster development

The first picture was the original picture taken for my poster, however I decided to retake this as the leotard the protagonist is wearing was not featured in the trailer. I took another picture to ensure the protagonist was wearing a leotard that she wore in the trailer to provide synergy and house style between my products. It would also make it more clear to the audience that the girl in the poster is the protagonist as she would be more recognisable in the same clothing.

Decisions of sound

I have decided to begin and end the trailer with non diegetic music of the song 'Hall of fame' by The Script. I have chosen this song based on my primary research as I asked my target audience what type of music they would expect in trailer with genre of drama. The answers consisted of music that is calm but dramatic, with moments of dullness and happiness, serious and piano based. I thought this song fitted this description well as it is dramatic but also calm and also consists of dull and happy moments. Therefore I have included the most happy and dramatic part of the music at the end of the trailer as this is the part where the protagonist has overcome the struggle in the film and is happy with her life, friends and gymnastics again. I have included the start of the song; the piano based part, at the beginning of my trailer as this allows for the sound of the voice over to be over the top of the song and therefore these two non-diegetic sounds combined, introduce the trailer and protagonist well. In addition to this, I believe this song choice had lyrics that were relevant to the story line and to the protagonist. For example, the protagonist is upset about not being able to compete in a gymnastics competition she had been working towards for a long time, so when the overcomes the situation and her gymnastics is better than ever, the words 'hall of fame' are inspirational and fit the purpose of the film/trailer.

In another section of my trailer I have included piano music behind the voice over of the protagonist. I chose this as it is emotional music which cooperates with narration of the protagonist and the mies-en-scene of her within the shots. This part of the trailer consists of the protagonist being upset about her injury and not being able to do gymnastics. The music reflects on her emotions and feelings at this point and therefore highlights this making it easier for the audience to relate with her.

Another song I have incorporated into my trailer is 'Keep your head up' by Ben Howard. I believe this song was appropriate as I put it into my trailer when the protagonist was attempting to overcome her injury by getting back on track with her gymnastics. As she is worried and does not have a lot of hope and determination about being able to reach the standard of gymnastics she was at before, I think the lyrics of 'keep your head up' and 'keep your mind set' are suitable for the protagonist's situation. Also, the fact the protagonist has a change in personality towards her friends, family and coach after her injury and therefore I think the lyrics of 'keep your heart strong' are relatable for the trailer too; Therefore I thought this was an appropriate soundtrack for this part of my trailer.

I have decided to include a non-diegetic sound of a narration of the protagonists voice throughout my trailer. I have decided to include this to convey the storyline to my audience in a simple form as I believed this would be more effective for my demographic audience. This type of sound being used also helps for my audience to relate with my protagonist as they are being spoken to by her directly; this also makes it personal and enables them to engage with the trailer more.

Using iMovie

To insert my video clips into my trailer, I uploaded all of the videos I had filmed onto 'my media' on iMovie. I could then chose a clip I wanted, crop it to the part of that clip I want and then select the '+' on the clip which would then add the selected clip to the end of my timeline. I also, for some clips, selected the part of the video wanted and then dragged that video onto my timeline in the exact place I wanted it to be.

After putting the media onto my timeline, I then could trim or extend the clips. For example, on this clip, after cropping and inserting it onto my timeline I decided I wanted more of the clip than I had cropped and therefore used this tool to extend the clip on the trailer.

The timeline allows you to add multiple videos and audio on top of each other enabling them to be played at the same time. For example, in this part of my trailer, this allowed me to have my video playing as well as music and another audio clip of a voice over at the same time.

Regarding the audio clips, the line throughout the middle of each clip relates to the percentage of how loud the sound is. This allowed me to change how loud each clip is in relation to each other. For example, at this point in my trailer I had the percentage of sound for the voice over quite high by dragging the line upwards. The other audio clip was a song in which I dragged the line down to ensure the clip was quiet. This allowed for the voice over to be heard over the music.

Progress and decisions of shots, effects and tools etc.

This toolbar shows some of the tools available to use in my trailer. Throughout the editing of my trailer I have used the 'colour balance' and 'colour correction' tool to brighten some shots that may be too dark to see; doing this makes the shots more visible and appealing. A few shots I have used the 'crop' tool to improve the framing of my shots. On each frame I have also included the 'stabilisation' tool to stabilise each shot, ensuring they're not shaky. Another tool I have used on every shot is the 'volume' tool. I have used this to mute all sound due to the fact I am having no dialogue in my trailer; I am planning on including non-diegetic music and narration. I have also used the 'speed' tool throughout my trailer to increase and decrease the speed and pace of each shot. The 'clip filter' tool has been used to add effects to the shots I consider important to highlight them from the rest of the shots within my trailer.

I used this high angle shot at the beginning of my film as it portrays the theme of the trailer. I have put this at a slow speed and put a sound effect to the movement of the girls going gymnastics to highlight their the fact gymnastics is the main theme. It shows 3 girls around the age of 13 which gives the audience an idea of how old the characters are and therefore gives an idea of what age and gender the target audience of this film/trailer is. I have also put an effect on this shot as I think this highlights its important of setting the scene.

The next shot used in my trailer is a close up of the protagonist. I thought it was important to have a shot like this at the beginning of the trailer to show the audience who the main protagonist is. I have included mies-en-scene of her happy at home; talking/laughing to show she is a normal, 13 year old girl with a happy life which enables the audience to relate with her.

Immediately after this I have included a tracking shot of the protagonist doing gymnastics; I have placed this after the close up of the protagonist to make it very clear to the audience that this is the protagonist, and to portray that she is good at and enjoys gymnastics.

I have included shots consisting off the main protagonist and her friends in different locations to convey they train at gymnastics together in addition to socialising at gymnastics and also them outside of the gym together to portray the fact these girls are also friends outside of gym. These shots are placed near each other within my trailer to convey their friendship to the audience.

I have separated this shot by using a cross dissolve transitions as I thought the duration of this shot was too long and therefore to make it more interesting and to fit in with the pace of the rest of the trailer, the shot needed to be edited in this way.

The range of shots used to show the protagonist falling off the beam and injuring herself have been edited by putting them in slow motion. This highlights the fall to convey the fact it is a key part of the trailer and film. It also reflects on the protagonists experience and feelings during this fall; the slow motion allows the audience to empathise with the protagonist. I have also used an effect on these shots to make them stand out from the rest to further show it is a key part. Another tool I have used is the 'audio effect' tool. I have included a 'muffled' audio effect on these shots during her fall as it further makes the series of shots stand out. It also portrays the situation as unreal for the protagonist and gives an insight of what the experience may have been like for her.

I have included this establishing shot near the end of my trailer which includes the sound of everyone cheering for the protagonist. This diegetic sound incorporated with the non-diegetic, dramatic music helps to covey the excitement of the protagonist overcoming her injury and doing gymnastics again. It highlights the support from all her friends which helps to portray everyone is proud of her.

I decided to include this shot at the end of the the trailer as it shows the protagonist, Alexis, looking proud of herself and what she has overcome. This suggests to the audience that the film has a positive outcome and also portrays the act the protagonist is back to her normal self. I have edited this by putting it in slow motion to make the shot stand out and to show the protagonists importance. I have also edited this by adding in a transition of a 'cross zoom' into the text caption of 'Alexis'. The transition allows for the audience to see a clear link between the face and name of the protagonist which makes it easier to relate with her. The text caption consists of the logo of my film. This increases the brand identity and creates house style and synergy between each of my products. The colour and font are clear and suit my demographic audience therefore contributing to their engagement of the trailer.

This is the main transition effect I have used throughout my trailer. I have included it between a lot of my shots as it improves the overall pace of my trailer and separates series of shots to give the audience a clear view.

Magazine front cover development

When beginning to create my magazine cover, I firstly chose to use the colour blue. However, I think the colour scheme is an important part of the product as it is a key part in creating synergy and giving my products a house style and brand recognition. Therefore I decided to think more about the colour scheme used by taking into consideration what would attract my target audience. My target audience is girls around the age of 13 as this is how old my protagonist is which would make it easier for my audience to relate with the protagonist. Due to this, I decided a pink/purple colour may be more appealing for my target audience. To confirm this, I changed the colour of the fonts etc in my magazine front cover and asked some year 9 girls within the school which magazine front cover they preferred. As the majority chose the one with the pink/purple colour fonts, I decided to use this colour scheme within my magazine cover and within my other products to create synergy between them.

Script

Protagonist voice over

(Introduction to protagonist)
I started doing gymnastics when I was 4 years old and instantly fell in love with it. It's not just a place to train, its my second home. Those went just my team mates, they're my family. And its not just a sport; its my life.

(Injury)
I was so determined for this important competition coming up. I had been waiting what felt like my entire life and I would not let anything get in my way... but then this happened.

(After injury)
I couldn't believe it. Gymnastics is my life and not being able to do the sport made me feel like my life was over. What hurts the most out of everything it watching your friends get to do the thing you love, without you. And getting told you can't compete for something you've worked so hard for. I honestly lost all hope.

(Overcoming injury)
I never thought I would overcome this situation, but with the support from my friends, family, coach and everyone around me, I am now back on track with gymnastics and the happiest I've ever been.

Poster drafts

These plans relate to my research as I have noticed by analysing posters of the same genre as me, that  the posters always consist of having the film title near the bottom of the poster. Most of them also have the actor name near the top of the poster, therefore to follow convention I have included this in my poster drafts. The last poster draft I created is unconventional regarding the posters I have analysed. However as it is landscape it will have different aspects and a different layout. I also thought this would be a good way to merge 2 images to include more characters on the poster. This is conventional as the posters I have looked at include other characters around the protagonist. I have also ensured the credits are put at the bottom of the poster as I have noticed this is conventional. I have chosen to include a picture of my protagonist doing gymnastics as the posters I have analysed all consist of mies-en-scene showing the theme of the film and characteristics of the protagonist. Therefore I thought to follow convention and create synergy between the poster and trailer, I would include the protagonist doing gymnastics with the gym in the background. This shows the environment she is in and therefore portrays a lot about the film and creates synergy between the products.

Magazine cover drafts

To follow convention, in my magazine drafts I have included the masthead along the top of the front cover in the biggest font on the page, and have ensured the feature article photo is placed in front of the masthead. My feature article photos will be of the protagonist to follow convention and ensure synergy between the products. They are placed central with eye contact with the camera to follow convention. However I have chosen to have one draft with the image on the write side with plugs and puffs down the left side as I have noticed whilst analysing that some film magazine covers consist of this layout. The coverlines are placed below the feature article photo but overlap to ensure it is clear to the audience that these have a link and are the main part of the magazine. Another way I have followed convention regarding my research is by ensuring the plugs and puffs are aligned left and right with smaller text than the masthead and coverlines.

I have created call sheets to help me whilst filming. The call sheet includes the location of shots, the shot number to give an idea of where it will be within the trailer, the shot type and cast needed. I have organised my shots by location to ensure I am only filming at one location at a time; I have then separated the shots into separate lists indicating what I am planning to film on each day. Creating a call sheet is a useful tool due to the fact I can print it off to take with me filming. This will ensure I have all the information I need with me in a simple and easy to read format which is make filming a lot easier. I have put all 'call sheets' on one sheet because of not being sure whether I will get all filming that I plan to get done in the time allocated, or if I will have extra time left over. Therefore it is useful to have all the shots on one page with me.
